Definition of Workforce Development

Workforce development for youth encompasses a wide range of employment and educational services.

We define workforce development as including the following:

  • Building relationships with employers and placing youth in internships or jobs
  • Providing programming that exposes youth to careers and/or occupations
  • Career and technical education (teaching specific skills for an occupation or craft)
  • Work readiness training that provides a general orientation to the world of work, such as punctuality and interpersonal skills (sometimes called soft skills training)
  • Entrepreneurship
  • GED preparation
  • External Diploma Program
We define youth as people between 14 and 24 years of age. We are interested in
  • youth programs that incorporate workforce development elements, and
  • workforce development programs that serve youth (both those that serve youth exclusively and those that serve youth and adults.)
